El Capitolio, Havana

#10 of 356 in Things to do in Havana
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Admire the majestic El Capitolio, once home to Cuba's government. Now housing the Cuban Academy of Sciences, this building from 1929 was modeled after the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. Observe the grandiose structure, a project initiated by dictator Gerardo Machado, view the massive Doric columns that guard the entrance, and look up to see the impressive dome, inspired by the Paris Pantheon. The interior, even more intricate and rich in decorations, boasts the enormous Statue of the Republic, one of the world's largest indoor statues.
