Must see · World heritage site · Historic Walking Area · Landmark
History remains a palpable part of daily life at Old Havana, the World Heritage-listed downtown of Cuba's capital. Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, this historical neighborhood long served as the hub of commerce and a resting point for marauders transporting New World treasures back to Europe. The narrow streets of the central district contain numerous examples of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, as well as a charming ensemble of private homes complete with neatly decorated balconies and lush internal gardens. The starting point of many tours, this area contains Havana's main square and a 16th-century fortress guarding the entrance into the city's picturesque harbor.
