The Little Mermaid, Copenhagen

Despite its small size, The Little Mermaid serves as one of the city's major symbols. Based on the well-known fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, this unimposing bronze mermaid is the work of sculptor Edvard Eriksen. Commissioned by Danish beer baron Carl Jacobsen in 1909, the artist modeled the mermaid's face after ballerina Ellen Price and the body after his wife's. The statue miraculously survived the destructive forces of World War II undamaged, becoming a kind of city mascot over the years. • This is a small statue but is iconic of Copenhagen. With so many statues throughout Europe unless one wants to visit because it is an icon of Copenhagen there is no reason to visit at all.  more »

  • I've deliberately posted my worst photo of the statue as its more representative of the experience. Its a famous statue, but I wouldn't say its a great one, and unfortunately with the rather ugly buildings on the opposite bank its not exactly picturesque. Yes you can crop frames and shoot from slightly above to get a better photo (direction of sun permitting) and you'll get a better picture, but the visit itself will have the industrial background and the coach tours if people to contend with. All in all it leaves you a bit underwhelmed.
  • I went here because everyone I spoke to about Copenhagen said “you have to go there.” It was a nice walk, but it was probably the most crowded tourist attraction in Copenhagen. It was a nice statue but of you only have a short amount of time I wouldn’t waste time going here unless you are a big little mermaid fan. I was able to snap a few noce photos around the large crowd.
