Shoes on the Danube Bank, Budapest

4.6
The emotional exhibit, Shoes on the Danube Bank pays tribute to Jewish victims killed along the Danube during World War II. View the 60 pairs of iron 1940s-style shoes that represent the footwear left behind by the Jews who were forced to stand barefoot at the river's edge to be shot by Arrow Cross militiamen during the Holocaust. Sculptor Gyula Pauer and filmmaker Can Togay designed and created this moving memorial, which was erected in 2005. Experience this powerful installation in between your visits to other nearby sites, such as the Parliament building, which is just a short walk away. Inspirock's itinerary builder makes planning a Budapest trip simple and quick.

  • Please, if you visit try to be respectful! This monument is a thoughtful and creative way to pay tribute to those who lost their lives, and seeing groups of people snap pictures posing/smiling/laughing then just walking away felt... weird. It's not that I don't think pictures should be taken at all, but it was kind of uncomfortable the way I saw people going about it. :(
  • Nice location. Interesting story behind the shoes. Detailed metal work when looking at the shoes. This is a nice place to visit if you're local or a tourist. The views along the river bank are great and there is some amazing architecture! Worth a visit if you are ever in Budapest. Located right next to the parliament building.
