The Big Hole, Kimberley

#1 of 69 in Things to do in Northern Cape
Must see · History Museum · Museum
Dug out manually by 50,000 miners, The Big Hole is an example of open-pit mining, now filled with water. When the diamond mine closed in 1914, the site--possibly the world's deepest hand-dug hole--became a popular tourist attraction. You can take a guided tour to learn more about the area's mining history and see a reconstruction of a typical mining settlement from the 1880s. An elevator can take you down a disused shaft--you may want to skip this if you're at all claustrophobic. • There are lots of cool stuff, that were used in early years trams, old cars etc. It's a great place to visit with your family. You can easily get someone to explain everything for you. Security are there 24/7...
  • Very pleased to see local government ostensibly understands the inherent economic value of SA heritage. Thank you for neat facilities and preservation of SA history. Will visit again if status quo remains. Please provide outside assistants with employer identity cards for safety reasons.
