Puerto Montt

— 4 nights
Though the city serves as a regional transport and commercial hub, vacations in Puerto Montt rarely focus on the city itself; instead, Southern Chile's volcanoes, glacial lakes, and national parks get most of the attention here.
Get outdoors at Valle Cochamo and Tierra Outdoors. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Reloncaví Sound and Catedral de Puerto Montt. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Puerto Montt: Iglesia Sagrado Corazon de Jesus (in Puerto Varas) and Iglesia Inmaculada Concepcion (in Frutillar). The adventure continues: examine the collection at Museo Antonio Felmer, don't miss a visit to Monte Verde, kick back and relax at Angelmo, and experience rural life at Granja Educativa Tierraviva.

To see photos, maps, and tourist information, you can read our Puerto Montt trip planner.

Johannesburg, South Africa to Puerto Montt is an approximately 28-hour flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 6 hours traveling from Johannesburg to Puerto Montt. Plan for little chillier temperatures traveling from Johannesburg in December, with highs in Puerto Montt at 21°C and lows at 9°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 28th (Thu) so you can go by car to Valdivia.

Land of Poets
Squeezed between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, geographically diverse Chile is a long, thin stretch of land encompassing some of the world's driest deserts in the north, and some of its largest glacial fields in the south. Though most Chile holidays include some form of adventure in the vast wilderness areas, the country also contains charming cities providing plenty of urban things to do and see. Many tours of Chile include at least a brief visit to the country's lush wine regions, where backyard vineyards compete with sprawling estates producing some of the world's most respected whites and reds.
