Maseru

— 6 nights
Founded in 1869 by the British, Lesotho's main city--Maseru--lies on the border with South Africa on a plateau surrounded by red hills.
Ha Kome Cave Houses and Thaba-Bosiu National Monument will appeal to history buffs. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Our Lady of Victory Cathedral and Morija Museum & Archives. Get out of town with these interesting Maseru side-trips: Maletsunyane Falls Semonkong (in Semonkong), Gates of Paradise Pass (in Malealea) and Mafika Lisiu Pass (in Pitseng). And it doesn't end there: see human ingenuity at work at Katse Dam, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Maluti Mountains, explore the galleries of National Museum, and get a taste of the local shopping with Lesotho Co-operative Handicrafts.

For ratings, where to stay, traveler tips, and tourist information, go to the Maseru travel planner.

If you are flying in from Sweden, the closest major aiport is Moshoeshoe I International Airport. In June in Maseru, expect temperatures between 17°C during the day and 5°C at night.
