Kimberley — 2 nights

As the heart of the Northern Cape's "Diamond Fields"--the region where the glittering jewels were discovered in the 1870s--Kimberley has evolved from a simple mining encampment to a thriving city rich in history and heritage.
On the 11th (Fri), examine the collection at Kimberley Mine Museum, take an in-depth tour of The Big Hole, and then take in the history at Magersfontein Battlefield. Here are some ideas for day two: see the interesting displays at McGregor Museum, then examine the collection at Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre, and then stroll through Felidae Centre.

For where to stay, photos, maps, and other tourist information, read Kimberley holiday planner.

Johannesburg to Kimberley is an approximately 3-hour flight. You can also drive; or take a bus. Plan for little chillier nights when traveling from Johannesburg in August since evenings lows in Kimberley dip to 4°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 13th (Sun) early enough to go by car to Springbok.

Highlights from a Northern Cape itinerary include rock climbing among the mountains and learning about the region's diamond-mining history. See a former excavation site--now filled with water--that claims to be the world's largest hole excavated by hand. Although partially covered in desert, the region blooms in spring, when the spectacle of vast fields of flowers generates an influx of tourism to the Northern Cape, the largest and most sparsely populated region of South Africa.
